1. Check the cold zone

Confirm the refrigerator is at or below 40°F / 4°C with an appliance thermometer.Wipe up spills and keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs separate from ready-to-eat food.Leave enough room around food for cold air to circulate.

2. Resolve uncertainty

Read the original package date wording and storage directions before deciding what to use or discard.Review cooked leftovers against official cold-storage guidance; many cooked leftovers are listed for 3 to 4 refrigerated days.Remove leaking, moldy, or clearly spoiled food. Remember that appearance and smell cannot prove that food is safe.

3. Make the next meal easier

Move food with the nearest confirmed date to the front without blocking vents.Label opened food and leftovers with the date you opened or prepared them.Choose up to three foods to use first and put them into a realistic meal plan.
